Privacy Rights

In today’s world, we all have sensitive personal information that resides in company and health system databases. This information may include your health and medical records, financial information, educational records or other sensitive personal information. Numerous state and federal privacy laws protect the confidentiality and use of your personal information. These laws and a rapidly developing body of court decisions provide you with a variety of rights if a company is improperly using your personal information for profit, failing to safeguard your data or otherwise breaching the laws.

Many health care consumers are familiar with HIPAA privacy rights, which arise from a law originally passed in 1996, called the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Other privacy laws include the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, also known as the Financial Services Modernization Act of 1999, which protects personally identifiable, nonpublic information held by financial institutions such as banks. The Fair Credit Reporting Act is another example of a law that protects consumers and the manner in which information about them is shared. The attorneys at Thorman Petrov Group are committed to protecting the privacy rights of consumers and to redressing violations of the various privacy laws.
